Postpartum Workout and Two Roads Diverged

For all of the things that I grumble about when it comes to living in Prince George, BC (the crappy shopping being the biggest one), there’s one thing that I do love about this place: it really is beautiful.  This is a city that actually has urban forests.  Since forestry is a huge industry here, this isn’t a city that’s completely divorced from nature.  Plus, summers are pretty mild here… so that means I’ve got a lot of options for a postpartum workout.  I could get my postpartum workout done by going swimming in one of the many lakes, or by going for a swim in one of the gentler areas of the river.  Or I could go for one of my favorite ways of taking in the beauty of British Columbia and getting a good postpartum workout done: go for a hike.

It’s funny; I’m really not an outdoors person.  My idea of roughing it is a hotel room with a queen size bed.  In spite of all that, my favorite thing to do is put on my running shoes, leash up a dog or two, and go for a trail.  There’s one set of trails within walking distance of my house.  If I go on that trail, I put the kids in the Phil & Ted Explorer stroller, leash up Winston the Wonder Chihuahua, and go.  Or sometimes I take both Winston and T’akaya the Brilliant Border Collie.  The views from the river are nice and peaceful.

Seriously. Bears? In city limits? *sigh*

If it’s just me and T’akaya, my favorite place to take her is Forest for the World, a large trail that joins with the UNBC trail network.  The terrain isn’t so rugged that I’m mountain climbing, but I do have to be aware of the surroundings.  It’s never mindless.  Of course, it means I also have to watch out for nature.  No joke, there’s a sign warning about bears when you enter that trail… and when you leave Forest for the World and go to the narrower Cranbrook Greenway.  It’s also quite lovely and scenic, so that helps.

To paraphrase Robert Frost, “Two paths diverged in the woods… and I took the one most traveled in order to avoid being eaten by a bear. Or attacked by a zombie.”

I’ve gone a few miles in there, but I’m always careful to stay on the main trails.  For one thing, I can’t read a map.  It’s only my excellent sense of direction that’s prevented me from getting lost on the trail and needing to ask for directions.  For another, I’m lacking a set of bells to put on the dog… and a good melee weapon.  (The bells are to avoid startling the bears… and the melee weapon is to fend off an attack should the bells attract a zombie.)  Once I get the appropriate bells and weaponry, though, I’m looking forward to a 17 km hike, just me and the dog.  It’s really the most fun postpartum workout that I can do in the summer.  It gets me some alone time, and it’s very nearly as good of a calorie burn as Turbo Jam.  And if I can do that 17 km hike, then maybe I can take another trip up to Mount Robson for a hike on the Berg Lake trail.
