DIY Kid Closet Dividers

I love shopping for baby clothes.  And toddler clothes.  Because I try to be a thrifty mom when it comes to buying cute baby clothes, it means that I often buy clothes ahead for both Norton and Eudora.  However, being a thrifty mom and buying ahead is a big fail if the cute baby clothes are missed and outgrown before your kid even has a chance to wear them.

I’ve found that the biggest thing that makes buying clothes ahead work is just a little bit of organization.  Even if you’re not a super organized mom or a terribly crafty mom, there are things that you can do to help keep your stash of kid clothes organized.

DIY Kid Closet Divider

In just a few minutes, I have an easy way to keep my kids’ closets organized!

I like to hang everything up.  Hanging everything up means that I can keep everything organized by size and see exactly what’s in the closet.  I know how I work: if I put it in a drawer or in a bin, I’ll forget it and not come across it again until Norton is ready to vote.  But if I just hang it all in the closet willy-nilly, then I’ll find random things at inopportune times.

Enter kid closet dividers.

I looked into the idea of buying them, and found that they were just… blah.  It shouldn’t be that hard to make them myself.

Turns out that it’s not.

* foam sheets (I used 8×10 inch sheets)
*Exacto knife (though you could probably get by with scissors)
*A straight edge (I used a builder’s square)
*Something to decorate (I used stickers that went with my nursery theme)
*Something to indicate the size in that section (Optional.  I didn’t bother with this because I organize from left to right and I know it.)

All that I did was cut them into thirds (measured out) with the exacto knife.  After that, I used the lid from one of my baby bottles to make the hole for the closet rod.  I decorated with stickers and then pressed them flat for an extra day to make sure the stickers didn’t peel off the foam sheets.  Cut slits in the closet hanger to get them on the rod (and avoid taking the closet rod down) and that’s it!  Easy, DIY kid closet dividers that match the theme of my nursery.

How do you keep your kids’ closets organized?

  1. I like your idea for dividers! We just keep our sons clothes separated by style and color (all jeans together…all short sleeves together plus by colors) It was a lot of work initially but it always seems to be a real time saver ever since….besides it the same way I organize my closet (styles and colors together) I guess that a little weird isn’t it?? lol

    • LOL! Actually, it’s how I have my own closet organized. My kid’s closets are organized the same way, but by size then clothing type. Eudora may be wearing 3-6 month clothes right now, but I have clothes up to 2T or maybe even 3T for her.

  2. That’s a neat idea…never have thought of using dividers in a closet like that!
