Overnight Pocket Diaper Insert Combination Suggestions

When I first switched to cloth diapers when my daughter was a little over three months old, I decided to stop using disposables all together. Although some cloth diapering mamas ultimately decide to continue using disposable diapers at night because of problems with leaks, I have been able to find a number of overnight solutions that work great for my baby. She sleeps up to thirteen hours at a time without a diaper change (and I am not about to wake a sleeping baby just to change a wet diaper that is not bothering her). Here are some of the pocket diaper insert combinations that I have found that work great for overnight use.

Bamboo is the perfect material for overnight use. Thin but absorbent, bamboo inserts offer protection against leaks without the problem of an overly bulky diaper. The first combination of pocket diaper inserts that I used for overnight use therefore included bamboo. When I first switched to cloth, I used two Blueberry bamboo inserts and one microfiber insert inside a pocket diaper. The microfiber insert wicked the moisture away from my daughter’s body while the bamboo absorbed the thirteen hours of wetness without leaking. If you only ever buy one bamboo insert for overnight use, you cannot go wrong with a Blueberry.

Once I decided that I no longer wanted to wash dirty diapers everyday, I needed to find some additional overnight insert combinations. My first experiment was one three-layer bamboo insert from Alva Baby sandwiched between two four-layer microfiber-bamboo inserts from Alva Baby. Although a little more bulky than the Blueberry bamboo inserts, the combination of blend and bamboo Alva Baby inserts was just as absorbent.

Soon after switching to washing my diapers every other day, I decided that I wanted to do my diaper laundry only every third day. For my third overnight diaper, I thus played around with a combination of two four-layer microfiber-bamboo inserts from Alva Baby and one microfiber Stay Dry insert from Best Bottom. The Best Bottom insert wicked the moisture away from my daughter’s body while the blend inserts absorbed the thirteen hours of wetness. A great solution to the overnight problem, my Best Bottom insert, however, was not an insert that I was willing to part with for long for only overnight use.

Searching for a replacement to my insert combination containing the Best Bottom Stay Dry insert, I experimented with a combination of Alva Baby blend inserts and Sunbaby bamboo inserts. Thus, my third overnight diaper evolved into a pocket diaper stuffed with two three-layer bamboo inserts from Sunbaby sandwiched between two four-layer microfiber-bamboo inserts from Alva Baby. Of all my bamboo inserts, the Sunbabies are my favorite. Super absorbent but ultra-thin, Sunbaby bamboos get the job done.

Now that I have four tried and true combinations of pocket diaper inserts for overnight use, I can confidently allow my daughter to sleep for up to thirteen hours each night while washing my diapers only every third day.

We have four night time diapers: Blueberry bamboo fitted, Kiwi Pie bamboo fitted (2), and a Bonnibuns night time nappy. We use Flip covers over all of them (even the Bonnibuns, although you don’t necessarily need a cover with it, depending on how long the diaper’s on your baby). I always add a Thirsties Fab Doubler to each diaper OR a fleece-topped microfiber insert that I made myself. I’m thinking about giving wool a try though, as my son grows.

  2. I’ve been looking for the ideal natural fiber insert. I love my BG pockets, but I’m not a microfiber fan. I never thought of looking into Alva or Sunbaby! Any other reccomendations?
