AMP Duo Diaper Review

Recently, I received an AMP Duo diaper for review for the Summer Cloth Giveaway.  The AMP Duo is a one size cloth diaper made in Canada by a Canadian cloth diaper company.  I tested the diaper out on my own little model, Eudora, and loved it so much that I bought more.

About the AMP Duo

The AMP Duo is a creation by Annie Marie Padorie (or AMP).  When Annie’s children were small, she wanted to use cloth diapers.  However, none of them worked quite the way she wanted to, either with fit, finish, or effectiveness.  Like most moms, Annie was about being a problem solver.  Since she couldn’t buy the diaper that she wanted, she designed and made her own.  AMP Diapers is a Canadian company and her diapers are still made in Canada.  The reason that the AMP Duo is called the Duo is because you can either use the diaper as a pocket or as an all-in-two.  If you want to use it as a pocket (which is my preferred method), just stuff an insert inside as usual.  If you want to use it as an all-in-two, simply lay your insert on top.  (Important: do NOT use microfiber if you want to use it as an all-in-two.)

What’s Awesome About the AMP Duo

AMP Duo Diaper Review (Cloth Diaper Addicts)

There’s no cloth diaper junk in that trunk.

Whenever I get a new diaper, I pull it out of the packaging, turn it over in my hands, flip it inside out, and take a look at the stitching and the PUL quality.  The finish on the diaper is wonderfully clean.  It holds up quite well.  The snaps are firm, but not so firm that it’s a tug of war to get them on or off.

I find that when stuffed with the hemp insert, it’s very trim.  In fact, it’s so trim on Eudora under shorts that you’d think she was wearing a disposable.  Another surprise: I generally hate hemp.  I find it to be too stiff and scratchy.  While the AMP hemp inserts are not as silky smooth as bamboo, they are much softer than the average hemp insert, and quite effective for my little princess.  I think I’m actually going to go ahead and buy more of them.

It’s also a beautiful fit.  She’s currently wearing her AMP Duo on the middle snap rise, so I have a hard time imagining it not fitting her.  I can actually getnNorton into one with room to spare at 34 pounds.

The colors in the AMP Duo line up are also incredible.  You’ve got the normal array of blues and pinks and oranges… but there are also some different, deeper hues that most big name manufacturers don’t do, like burgundy and olive.

What’s Not Awesome About the AMP Duo

AMP Duo Diaper Review (Cloth Diaper Addicts)

It’s a little hard to get great bum shots when she’s preening for the camera.

I’m not really in love with the placement of the opening.  I prefer stuffing (and unstuffing) from the back.  The only changes that I’d make to the design of this diaper is that I’d have it as a rear stuffing so that I don’t have to get my fingers wet or have to make sure that the pocket opening is closed.  (When it’s in the back, the weight of the baby, even when squirming and fighting, will keep it closed.)

I don’t love that the insert is a separate purchase from the shell, but considering how much more I like the hemp than the microfiber (which is so odd for me!), I’m okay with that.

In a Nutshell?

I need to buy more of this diaper.  I’ve got a baby shower that I’m going to tomorrow, and there will be fluff.  Plus, there’s a dark purple shell that my husband will just love.

Do you have the AMP Duo?

Where to buy: Cozy Bums (Canada), Lagoon Baby (US/Canada)

  1. Tracy Adler says:

I agree, I absolutely loooove their color choices! Especially the dark purple! Thinking about the opening, I’m not sure how ill like that because all of my dipes (though I’ve yet to cd until our bubby arrives in October) are back opening as well… So we will see which I end up liking more 🙂

  2. Would love to get some of these diapers for our 2nd grandson due next week….they plan on cloth diapering. Love the variety of colors!

  3. RockyMountainSavings says:

Wow cloth diapers have really improved since the 80s! lol

  4. I love the new cloth diapers and think they are really neat but I think I would be annoyed at the inserts being extra also.

  5. This looks like a fantastic diaper! I love the variety of colours and think I might be a bit in love with the ruffle edge. I was put off by the insert being sold separately when my daughter was little so I never gave this diaper a chance… now that she has grown and potty trained, I would be fine with it – I had to replace all of my MF inserts around 15 months of age as they simply couldn’t handle her volume anymore without compression leaks…

  6. Shannon Stubbs says:

I have an AMP that I won awhile ago. I really like the fit and style, but for some reason, we had quite a few leaks in it which surprised me b/c of the style of the insert. I think I was doing something wrong, or maybe just b/c she was petite. We still used it b/c I really like it though.

    • The first AMP I had was a few years old, and I had some major issues with it. I was convinced that it was terrible, got rid of the ones that I had, and didn’t look back. Until a friend convinced me to try again. Apparently, AMP did some kind of updating because I’ve never had a leak in my newer AMPs.

  7. Rachel N says:

I love these diapers and have been eyeing the Paris print for a while. I also really like their bamboo inserts.

  8. Nicole Copeland says:

i never used cloth but they are cute

  9. Anna at Mama Writes says:

Thanks for the thorough review! I love the pictures of the babies! So cute

  10. I love the bold colors like burgundy, navy, and olive!

  11. Leela R. says:

Sounds like a pretty good diaper. I’ve never tried it but I like the fact that it sounds so trim.

  12. Rachel A. says:

Seems like a good diaper, but I agree about the opening of the stuffing.

  13. Nicole Q. says:

My kids are LONG out of diapers, but I like to keep on top of this stuff for all my preggo friends. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  14. Stephanie Lockwood says:

These sound like great diapers! Love the colors 🙂

  15. love pocket diapers. haven’t used AMP yet, but they are on my short-list of wants!

  16. Melissa G. says:

I haven’t tried AMP. Is the pocket opening in the front then? I’d like something that will be more trim with a prefold, maybe this is a good option.

  17. Meg Michelle Greenan Liani says:

Wow! I’m new to the cloth-diapering world, but this was very informative! It’s nice to hear the downside, as well! Thank you for such a great review!

  18. meg grundon says:

Sounds like a good diaper. Love the colors.

  19. Tannis W says:

I like that the duo can be used as an all in two or a pocket. Also, so happy that the company is Canadian and the diapers are made in Canada!

  20. This diaper sounds great – I’ve never tried hemp and it sounds like this might be the way to go for the first hemp insert we try.

  21. Tara Elias says:

yes, i have a bunch of AMPs. they’re actually made about an hour from me. great diapers.

  22. Colleen says:

Thanks for the review on this brand. I was curious: Why do you prefer pocket to All-in-Two? I’m interested in both so I was just wondering about your thoughts.

    • My daughter has extremely sensitive skin. If you look at her funny, she basically gets a rash. Because of that, I prefer to use them as pockets so that there’s the wicking of the microfleece. I’m also not convinced that I won’t have to change the shell from it getting wet, anyway.

  23. Sarah Hayes says:

Ive never tried this brand but I would really like to. they look super cute and Id really like to see how the fit is on my daughter

  24. Andrea R says:

I have 4 of these diapers. I use them as pockets. I’ve had a few leaks with them, likely due to not stuffing them well or compression. I like the opening in the front, since I now get less poo all over the diaper. I have not tried the inserts yet…I’m crazy about bamboo right now, and want to replace all my microfiber, so I might consider hemp.

  25. Ashley Feit says:

I’ve been wanting to try AMP for a long time, I love the ruffles around the legs!

  26. Laura P says:

Love the trimness factor! I’d love to try one of these diapers.

  27. Vivian S says:

I love the ai2 option! Sometimes I just don’t feel like stuffing a pocket diaper.

  28. I like that their are options on what the diaper will be stuffed with. I really like that it is well made and made in North America.

  29. Amber Mueller says:

I love the one that I have and definitely want more 🙂 Honestly didn’t know it was an AI2 though so great to know. Why didn’t I notice this review before said baby shower? 😉

  30. Jennifer Marohn says:

I LOVE diapers that are created by mom’s who need something better than what’s out there, and this diaper is a good example of that. It also comes in some really awesome colors and such. Great review!

  31. Becky Worthman says:

good tip to check the stitching! Glad to hear that this diaper is great quality!

  32. Carrie Barron says:

Thanks for sharing this review! I’m glad to know that the diaper is so trim and made well.

  33. I like the AI2 option because then (maybe) I can reuse the shell and have less laundry to do and less wear on the shell

  34. Love that you can use it as an AI2 or pocket.

  35. Olivia L says:

I have one lonely AMP diaper, and it’s one of the first ones I grab, because of the great fit and its trimness. The pocket opening is big enough that its placement doesn’t bug me too much, and hey at least it’s usually clear of the poop!

  36. Kristyn says:

I love hemp and definitely want to try these! They look so trim and comfy.

  37. Bekah Kuczenski says:

I have never tried AMP Duo diapers before… I love that they can be used as a pocket or as an AI2. I also love all of the color choices!!

  38. Dionne Hernandez says:

These seem so nice they are definitely going on my “must try” list! They look super trim and I love diapers with lots of color choices!

  39. I second the rear opening. Otherwise very trim indeed

  40. Amanda Saucedo says:

I really need to try one of these diapers! I’ve always heard great things about them.

  41. I understand about not liking the pocket opening in the middle because it makes unstuffing messier, but I think these style of pocket diapers usually unstuff themselves. Also, it seems like the pocket opening in the middle would make it easier to stuff (and I REALLY hate stuffing diapers!!)

  42. Carey Apfelbeck says:

love these diapers, discovered them several months ago and the are my absolute favorite for my twins!!

  43. AlannaB says:

I don’t have an AMP Duo, but it is on my “Cloth Diaper Bucket List”! I love that you can use it as an AI2 or pocket 🙂

  44. Katherine Pollard says:

I Love my AMP duo’s! Especially love the, because of the elastic on the front and the back of the diaper as opposed to many other brands that only have elastic in the back.

  45. Lily Ivey says:

These are on my must try list. I like that the stuff in the front.

  46. Anne Dawson says:

AMP duos were our first diapers and we’ve been in them for just over as year now. They have been great at all stages of growth and never ever had poosplosions like we did as a newborn in disposables.

  47. Would love to see these in person. They have such yummy colors and super cute prints!

  48. judith martinez says:

I haven’t tried the amp. I prefer duo pocket openings. I’m curious how the front opening would work.

  49. I would love to try one w my son!

  50. I do not not, but we did use cloth diapers for some time and I really like the newer ones – they seem to have alining and are better put together. thanks for the post – I think most people should try them first before regular ones…

  51. Never tried an AMP duo but now I want to because it really does look like a good fit!
