It took a while for Norton to show affection to me. It’s really only been since Eudora’s birth that Norton has been inclined to show me any affection at all. Now, though, I get lots of kisses and hugs. I know that I always make sure that he hears the words “I love you” at least once daily, though it’s probably more than that.
Norton, however, tends to use actions to show how he feels instead of words. He’ll hit Eudora when he’s angry. He’ll give her a kiss to show that he’s sorry. He gives me snuggles (even though they sometimes feel like strangles) to show affection. Typically, I only hear “I love you” if he’s repeating. Even then, though, episodes of his saying “I love you” has always been few and far between.
We had a different experience today. I was sitting down at my laptop doing some photo editing. Norton just threw his arms around me and said, “I love you, Mom.” (Okay, it was “I wuv you, Mom.” But same thing.) I was so thrilled that I nearly cried. It was the first time that he’d ever said “I love you” spontaneously.
It was something that I thought that I just might never hear. Sure, I know Norton loves me. But hearing it? That was just magical. I don’t ever, ever want to forget how special it was to hear him say those words all by himself without any prompting or repeating. I hope that I hear it again. Even if I don’t, though, he shows me through his words, and that’s even more important.
Did your child ever say anything to you that just made your heart melt?
