The Versatility of AppleCheeks Diapers

In the beginning of my cloth diapering career, I was leery of AppleCheeks diapers.  They came in two sizes.  They didn’t include inserts.  I wasn’t exactly clear on how they actually worked.  Was it a pocket diaper or was it a diaper cover?

After I finally found my local cloth diapering community, a mom was selling one of her own AppleCheeks covers.  The price was right.  I’d finally had enough experience under my belt and had become quite the little experimentalist in my own right.  I took the plunge and bought an AppleCheeks envelope diaper cover.  It was the Forget Me Not AppleCheeks in size 2.  I didn’t have any of the AppleCheeks inserts, so I put a Blueberry microterry insert inside and slapped it on Norton’s bum.

The Versatility of AppleCheeks Diapers (Cloth Diaper Addicts)I loved it.  I was so thrilled with the performance of that AppleCheeks diaper that I gave it a go as an overnight cloth diaper for Norton.  I stuffed it with the Blueberry microterry with a Flip organic overnight insert behind it.  It worked, so I bought another… and another…   Now I’m just collecting them.  I’m enjoying AppleCheeks diapers because of the versatility.  With an organic or a stay dry insert, you can use AppleCheeks diapers as all-in-twos.  Or you can stuff the diaper and use it as a pocket.

I tend to use it as a pocket just because pocket diapers are pretty much a favorite style for me.  I now generally use my AppleCheeks in a few different ways:

AppleCheeks Diapers Overnight

Since Norton is a supersoaker, I require an overnight cloth diapering solution for him that can be stuffed generously.  AppleCheeks does that.  I have a few particular combinations that I use.  It’s sort of like my Chinese menu.  Pick one from column A and one from column B, then you’ve got a pretty good solution.

Column A Column B
Blueberry large microterry insert Flip organic overnight
AppleCheeks stay dry insert AppleCheeks three-layer bamboo insert
Thirsties size 2 hemp prefold
GroVia bamboo prefold

It’s not always bulletproof, but I do find that I get best results when I use the Thirsties hemp prefold behind whatever microfiber option.  It is, however, the most bulletproof option I’ve found with Norton that my husband will actually use.

AppleCheeks Diapers for Daytime

When Norton was still wearing diapers, AppleCheeks diapers were awesome for daytime use… particularly if we were out on the go or if grandparents were baby-sitting.  Both Norton and Eudora were wearing size 2 AppleCheeks.  I would dress the kids in similar colors so that the diapers would still match for a diaper change, and just throw some AppleCheeks all stuffed and ready to go in the diaper bag.  It made the in-laws’ lives easier because they didn’t have to guess at which diaper was for Norton and which was for Eudora.  It also reduced the number of diapers that I had to pack.

Would I recommend AppleCheeks?  Yup!  I’m actually collecting them now.

Have you used AppleCheeks diapers?

  1. I use applecheeks at night with my 2 year old. I love that the pockets are big enough to stuff lots in. With my 8 month old I use a rumparooz stuffed with a small microfiber and a thirsties hemp prefold, love it.

    AppleCheeks? What a cute name!

  3. Lauren S. says:

I keep hearing good things about AppleCheeks – I need to try them!

  4. I’ve used them and it’s a “like,” but I wish it was a love. I just find that they aren’t as absorbent as some other brands, but they are a cute diaper and a fun brand!

  5. I think Applecheeks are adorable as well 🙂 I didn’t have as much success with them with my second daughter – but I had some used ones, so it might just be that something maybe was wrong with them (??). Who knows. But I REALLY want to get some for Baby Girl #3. And they definitely seem like a “collectible” type of brand. They’re just sooo expensive it’s hard for me to justify since it’s just a cover :-/ Capris or Applecheeks??

  6. I’m so glad I found this post! I’ve just found AppleCheeks and I LOVE them, too. I am new to cloth in general and have not actually tried using anything overnight yet – I have several of the inserts on your suggested list, so I am going to put them together and try them maybe tonight! Thank you, thank you!

  7. Alicia Owen says:

I’ve only used the AppleCheeks swim diaper, but love the way it’s designed so much that I would like to try the envelope covers too!

  8. I have not used Applecheeks diapers but I have heard such wonderful reviews of them that I think I might have to try one sometime!

  9. I have never tried AppleCheeks before. Sounds like a great little diaper!

  10. I just got my apple cheeks diapers and so far I really like them. I’m nervous about using cloth overnight because I have a super soaker. I’ll try some of your overnight suggestions.

I love AppleCheeks! I need to replace the elastic in ours because they’re wearing out after so many uses. Really want to get Wingin’ It and Orange You Glad. Probably won’t ever have all the ones they released, but I’d love to have as many as I can.

    • If you get Wingin’ It, you’ve got to get the t-shirt. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Wingin It print and decided to use it for overnights… but when I got the shirt to go with it, I was in love.

  12. Shalaina Simmons says:

I’m trying to read as many AC reviews as possible, since I am debating on whether or not to take the “plunge” myself. I’ve been coming across mostly positive things, including your opinion. Thanks! Especially for the night time input too.

  13. Danielle Bowers says:

I kind of want to try an AppleCheeks when for my niece when she’s born. I’m just looking for a good sale.

  14. Erin Mills says:

I really enjoyed this post as I’ve always wondered about Applecheeks. If I ever do decide to thin out my stash we will probably go with a few applecheeks, flips, and an assortment of inserts. It would be cool to eliminate microfiber from the stash altogether. 🙂

  15. It really is like a scientific formula – for each diaper there is a certain insert for a certain situation. I’ve never tried Applecheeks and am researching for my perfect cloth diaper!

  16. Heather Fantasma says:

I’ve been e-stalking Applecheeks for a while. May have to bite the bullet and just purchase…

  17. I’ve not tried Applecheeks yet but I’ve heard great things about them and would love to try them.

  18. I’ve only heard great things about AppleCheeks and I’m glad you found them se versatile. There is a cloth diaper store opening near my home next weekend and they will be selling AppleCheeks. I just can’t wait to see one in person and buy one for my baby girl due in December!

  19. I have yet to add an apple cheeks to my stash. Now I’m dying to.

  20. I haven’t tried Applecheeks diapers, but since I am a big pocket user and it sounds like these can be generously stuffed, I probably should venture out and try one.

  21. I just got my first AC but will have to wait to try it until my first LO gets here!

  22. Ooooh! I love my applecheeks 🙂 Super cute colors and very user friendly. Started to have some leaks, but I think it’s because she’s getting older and eating more!

  23. Nicole Bear says:

I haven’t tried Applecheeks but I would like to. I have heard good things about them. I pretty much completed my stash (ie. ran out of diaper budget!) before I found out about them. I am trying to get my sister to try them on her daughter who she is currently building a stash for.

  24. I’m a little hesitant to try an Applecheeks diaper on my LO. The size 2 doesn’t look big enough for my little chunk. We have a size 2 swim diaper from Applecheeks and it’s a little too snug (if that’s an indication). But I absolutely love the look of these diapers and keep hearing great stuff about them…..

  25. I have not used Applecheeks diapers but I would love to as I am building up my stash for my first baby!
