I love my cloth diapers. I have a fair amount of mainstream brands, but my collection of WAHM diapers has been growing by leaps and bounds. I can see why. They’re beautiful. They can often be well-made and fun, along with highly collectable. But here’s the thing: they are still fancy poop catchers.
I have a ridiculous stash that’s to the point that I’ve stopped inventorying it. I’m better off not knowing exactly how much I have. I think I’ll re-adjust it to have lists of what I’ve used, et cetera, so that I don’t have to know how much I actually have. But, still, I also know that everyone who uses cloth diapers has different reasons for their love of fancy poop catchers. That being said, there are some things that I just don’t get.
“It’s just too pretty to use!” That’s a comment that floors me, and it’s part of the craziness that can be a turn-off. Yes, some of my WAHM diapers are absolutely breathtaking to behold. They coordinate so well with a multitude of Eudora’s outfits. I’ve bought some Ella Bella Bum diapers just because I like how well they go with some clothes. I’ve bought outfits to go with Diapers by Chris creations I’ve had custom made. I love that they are unique and quite frequently well-made. Why would you have something that’s beautiful and then not use it for its purpose? Are you able to somehow appreciate the beauty of your fancy poop catchers when they are new in package?
I’ll say it again:
They are just fancy poop catchers.
If you’re collecting beautiful, expensive fancy poop catchers in hopes that they will continue to grow in value, I’ll remind you of the Beanie Babies craze. People went insane on those, spending hundreds of dollars in the hopes that “the one” would become valuable enough to pay for their children’s educations. My grandmother did the same thing with Barbie dolls. Now I have several vintage Barbie dolls that are still in their original boxes… and are seldom worth more than the original sticker price.
If you get some kind of pleasure out of looking at your fancy poop catchers with the knowledge that they have, in fact, never caught poop, more power to you. But I want the most beautiful cloth diapers out there to be functional, too.
Have you ever had a cloth diaper that was “too pretty to use?”
