Can I Mix & Match Cloth Diaper Inserts? (Diaper Advice)

Can I mix and match my cloth diaper inserts?

Cloth diaper inserts can make or break a diapering experience.  With that in mind, people frequently want to know if it’s okay to mix and match your cloth diaper inserts.

Like most bits of cloth diaper advice, it depends. Can I Mix & Match Cloth Diaper Inserts (Cloth Diaper Addicts)

Cloth Diaper Inserts Size

It’s important to use cloth diaper inserts that fit.  I would never use an original FuzziBunz minky insert in a BumGenius diaper.  The minky inserts are just far too narrow.  The size difference is so great that it would be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.  Because of the gap, the diaper would leak.  Badly.  Likewise, I wouldn’t try stuffing a BumGenius insert in an original FuzziBunz Elite, either.  The BumGenius diaper is so very wide that there’s no way it would fit comfortably.  You’d be forcing it in and your baby would end up with a weird, probably uncomfortable wrinkle under the bum.

Personal Taste

In general, I am one of those people who will painstakingly match my diapers to my inserts as I do my diaper laundry.  I match my FuzziBunz inserts by version.  I do the same with BumGenius, AppleCheeks, Thirsties, and Blueberry.  Then, of course, there are diapers that I use a different brand of insert with: I prefer Thirsties Stay Dry Duo in my AMP diapers, but I prefer AMP hemp inserts in my Ella Bella Bum and Diapers by Chris diapers.  It’s all very deliberate and carefully chosen.

Cloth Diaper Inserts Fit

There’s more to fit than cloth diaper inserts just fitting properly inside the diaper.  There’s also the matter of how well those cloth diaper inserts fit your needs.  As much as I love my microfiber, microfiber isn’t the be all and end all for everyone.  Some people find that they have a heavy wetter in the daytime; microfiber alone isn’t suitable for their needs because the little one has just moved into the jumperoo and is having compression leaks.  Or maybe you just don’t like microfiber, even though it’s what came with your diapers.  There’s no rule that says you have to use what came with your diaper.  Just use what works best for you, your baby, your diapers, and your budget.

Do you mix and match cloth diaper inserts, or do you have a tried and true “system” that you use?

  1. I mix and match mine all the time. I use only Best Bottom inserts during the day with all my covers.

  2. I used to be really anal about the insert that came with the diaper stayed with the diaper. Then K started wetting more and I needed to mix and match for the best absorbency. One of my favorite inserts is actually a small prefold

  3. We use mostly AIOs at this point because I have gotten lazy, but we use Thirsties hemp inserts and prefolds in any pockets that we do have (regardless of brand). I have gotten rid of all my microfiber inserts because I just don’t care for them.

  4. One Southern Girl says:

Most of our diapers are fuzzibunz and applecheeks and I use prefolds or FB inserts in both. It isn’t a big deal with our diapers, but I could see it being an issue if we had more brands of diapers that we used.

  5. I mix and match like a crazy lady! I don’t know what insert belongs where anymore and I don’t even try to match them anymore. Right now, I only need diapers at night, so I tend to stick with my prefolds in my covers and pockets. I have a few Tots Bots that I ADORE and just stick an extra bamboo insert inside for extra absorbency.

  6. Thirsties hemp inserts seem to fit pretty well in just about all our diapers – love them.

  7. Nicole Bear says:

I usually stick to the mf inserts that came with my pockets for daytime, but for night I have scavenged some of my bamboo inserts from other diapers and added some other hemp inserts to my night diapers.

  8. Gina Blomgren says:

I’m a “matchy” person and I probably would keep my brands the same. I mean, if I was ever in a pinch, I would use a different insert with a different shell.

  9. Michelle Lee says:

I use the same inserts in the same diapers each time, but not necessarily the inserts that came with the diaper. For instance, I love Smart Snugs inserts in my Rumparooz diapers!

  10. I had wondered about this, and was actually hesitant to try cloth diapers because I didn’t want to be that

  11. Viv Sluys says:

I mix and match to a degree. I keep my inserts stacked by size and material and then just grab to match the width and absorbency to go with the diaper I grab.

  12. Judith Martinez says:

I try to match the diapers with the inserts they came with but I also have some diapers that didn’t come with inserts and some extra inserts I ended up with so I use those together.
