Can I mix and match my cloth diaper inserts?
Cloth diaper inserts can make or break a diapering experience. With that in mind, people frequently want to know if it’s okay to mix and match your cloth diaper inserts.
Cloth Diaper Inserts Size
It’s important to use cloth diaper inserts that fit. I would never use an original FuzziBunz minky insert in a BumGenius diaper. The minky inserts are just far too narrow. The size difference is so great that it would be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway. Because of the gap, the diaper would leak. Badly. Likewise, I wouldn’t try stuffing a BumGenius insert in an original FuzziBunz Elite, either. The BumGenius diaper is so very wide that there’s no way it would fit comfortably. You’d be forcing it in and your baby would end up with a weird, probably uncomfortable wrinkle under the bum.
In general, I am one of those people who will painstakingly match my diapers to my inserts as I do my diaper laundry. I match my FuzziBunz inserts by version. I do the same with BumGenius, AppleCheeks, Thirsties, and Blueberry. Then, of course, there are diapers that I use a different brand of insert with: I prefer Thirsties Stay Dry Duo in my AMP diapers, but I prefer AMP hemp inserts in my Ella Bella Bum and Diapers by Chris diapers. It’s all very deliberate and carefully chosen.
Cloth Diaper Inserts Fit
There’s more to fit than cloth diaper inserts just fitting properly inside the diaper. There’s also the matter of how well those cloth diaper inserts fit your needs. As much as I love my microfiber, microfiber isn’t the be all and end all for everyone. Some people find that they have a heavy wetter in the daytime; microfiber alone isn’t suitable for their needs because the little one has just moved into the jumperoo and is having compression leaks. Or maybe you just don’t like microfiber, even though it’s what came with your diapers. There’s no rule that says you have to use what came with your diaper. Just use what works best for you, your baby, your diapers, and your budget.
Do you mix and match cloth diaper inserts, or do you have a tried and true “system” that you use?
