bumGenius Elemental 3.0 Review!

I really, really wanted to review the new bumGenius Elemental 3.0 myself. Since my children have outgrown diapers, I’ve had to pass along cloth diaper reviews to awesome mom friends of mine. Bailey of Simply Mom Bailey has been provided the bumGenius Elemental 3.0 for review so that she could share her honest opinions.

There is nothing more exciting the release of a new cloth diaper, especially for the addict in all of us. The reveal of a redesign of the bumGenius Elemental at ABC Kids Expo 2016 was no exception to the excitement. Lucky for me, Cozy Bums was just the destination to pick up a new and improved BumGenius Elemental!

Our handsome model demonstrates the bumGenius Elemental 3.0

Personally, I have been a long time enthusiast for the first generation of the Elemental and I’m giddy with excitement to see the return of the rolled elastic.  Let’s see how this redesign holds up.

About bumGenius

bumGenius is a diaper manufactured by Cotton Babies, who also make Flip.  The company is based out of St. Louis, Missouri and run by the fearless CEO, Jenn Labit.  bumGenius has been a mainstay of the modern cloth diaper industry. The first bumGenius pocket diaper was created 2005.  From there, they have refined and developed their designs into the bumGenius 5.0, the bumGenius Elemental 3.0, the bumGenius Freetime, and the Flip.

bumGenius Elemental 3.0 Diaper Design

The Elemental 3.0 embraces many of the familiar design elements of its earlier predecessors, and continues to be an All-in-One Diaper. It’s the same shape and size, making it suitable for babies 8-35lbs. It still offers patented stretchy tabs. And inside the diaper, you’ll still find organic cotton and a loop design absorbency.

bumGenius Elemental 3.0 Review - Cloth Diaper Addicts

With the 3.0, we find the return of rolled elastics. The 3.0 features an organic cotton inner that backs the PUL (no more exposed PUL!) and is complimented with a SINGLE LOOP of luxurious organic cotton. Both the loop and backing consist of three layers of organic cotton, providing you with a total of 6 layers of absorbency.

What I Love about the bumGenius Elemental 3.0

Who doesn’t love an All-in-One? Aside from the classic reasons to love a simple, easy to wash diaper, here’s what I love about the Elemental 3.0.

  • Organic Cotton! One of my first priorities when choosing a diaper is natural fibres. I love keeping synthetics at bay. Natural fibres give me an easy care diaper that washes out beautifully.
  • Longer & Skinner Loop. The loop in the 3.0 is slightly longer and skinnier than previous versions. This extra bit of length and narrowness of the loop make it easier to fold up on the shorter rises. This simple change reduces the overall bulk at the front of the diaper.

Inner of the new bumGenius Elemental 3.0

  • Seriously Trim. The Elemental has always been a trim diaper, and the 3.0 is no exception! A few changes in the shape of the loop, give a cleaner fit both in the front and back. And my little man’s tush couldn’t get any trimmer if it was a disposable.

An amazingly trim fit with the bumGenius Elemental 3.0!

  • Single Loop. Unlike the previous double loop, the single loop means easier clean up at the end of the day (*ahem* Poop doesn’t get squished between the layers and result in many an irritated mama trying to spray it clean).

Improvements & Concerns

My husband and I have one major area of concern with the bumGenius Elemental 3.0. As the Chief Poop Sprayer, he was the first to address the issue with me.

The Loop. That darn Loop. When it comes to spraying a diaper clean that lovely, darling loop of cotton absorbency becomes a poop catcher. My husband wished to provide visual demonstration, but we held back. This was a constant complaint of mine with earlier versions, and continues to be my biggest concern. I *just wish* they had decided to cut the end of the loop to allow it to flap freely for the removal of solid waste (and to allow me to fold it up to maximize absorbency where I need it most).

If you use any sort of cloth diaper liner, whether it be fleece or disposable, this is probably a moot point.

A few other concerns I have…

  • Absorbency isn’t great. It’s about average compared to other major natural fibre All-in-One’s, and on par with the previous Elemental.
  • It would be LOVELY if the Elemental 3.0 offered the option for stay dry. Personally, a stay dry diaper isn’t make or break for my little guy, but I understand that many families value this.

Recommendations

The bumGenius Elemental 3.0 ranks highly on my list of recommendations and I strongly encourage you to give it a try. You’ll fall in love, and soon be collecting a rainbow of Elemental 3.0’s to complete your stash. Choosing an organic cotton all-in-one will not let you down.

The new bumGenius Elemental 3.0 is beginning to arrive at Cozy Bums Diapers.  All colours are available for pre-order and will be shipped out as they arrive.   Cozy Bums expects to have all colours (except for Fearless) in stock by the end of the month.  Fearless should arrive in mid to late December.

Thirsties AIO

Thirsties redesigned their all-in-one a little bit ago. Here’s a list of the new AIO’s features:

  • Tongue style insert- four layers of microfiber total- three in tongue, one sewn in
  • Insert topped and shell lined with microfleece
  • Available in hook and loop (nice and strong) and snaps (two rows instead of one)
  • Easier to wash than the old tunnel style
  • Dries quickly
  • Pretty absorbent
  • Can add booster under tongue
  • Makes for a fluffy bottom (I had to bribe Little Man with chocolate to get him to hold still for pictures 🙂 )
  • One size to fit from 8 to 40 pounds
  • Three rise settings

Thirsties Redesigned All-in-one- Cloth Diaper Addicts

The changes to the all-in-one design are a great improvement, but I miss the two sizes. I feel like you get a better fit with the two different sizes, especially when you have a bitty newborn or a big toddler.  That being said, this does fit to 40 pounds. I was able to use it on Sister up to that weight, then sadly she outgrew it. I think the snaps fit a little smaller, as the hook and loop adds a little width around the waist. Thirsties products have always been of great quality, and they still are. There’s a reason they’re one of the more popular brands.

If you’re looking to buy one, you can go to Thirsties’ website and find a store local to you. This diaper was provided to me by my local cloth diaper dealer, Kristin of Northern Natural Baby and Mom. As of the time of this writing, she does not carry Thirsties’ products and is working on opening a home show floor. Check her out, she offers free shipping in Michigan.

Natural Fiber All-in-One Cloth Diapers

There’s a reason why there are so many different options for cloth diapers: everyone has different favorites.  Our babies are shaped differently and have different outputs.  Rather than just expecting us all to use the same thing and like it, now we’re blessed with an overwhelming array of cloth diaper brands to choose from!  But even with different brands, there’s different styles, different fibers, etc.  If you’ve decided that you love the convenience of an all-in-one, but only want natural fibers touching your baby’s bum, then this is the post for you!  Here’s a break down of some natural fiber all-in-one cloth diapers. Rock-A-Bums- A Rocking Diaper for Your Baby’s Rump

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

If you have not heard about Rock-A-Bums, you need to read this.  They are one of my new favorite cloth diapers (I have two other favorites) and I cannot sing their praises enough.  There are a couple of things that I would like to see different, but overall, AWESOMENESS!  I was excited to get one at no charge to review of course (hello, new cloth diaper!), but after receiving it and actually using it, yeah, these are staying in the stash.  I just can’t bring myself to part with them.

Does Everything

I really, really like that Rock-A-Bums markets these as a 5-in-1 diaper.  Yes, most pocket diapers can be used the same way EXCEPT as an all-in-two or one, but Rock-A-Bums is intended to be used in as many different ways as possible, not just as a pocket diaper, all-in-one, all-in-two, hybrid, or cover.

These diapers have snaps in the front and back where you can snap in the insert.  You can snap it in the front for an all-in-two or tuck the insert in the pocket and snap it in the back for an all-in-one.  There are openings in the front and back, with a flap of PUL across the front.  The back opening is nice and wide, so it’s really easy to stuff, even for big hands (I don’t have wide hands, just long ones).  Plenty of room to stuff it with whatever your heart desires- bamboo inserts, hemp inserts, prefolds, flats, the inserts that come with it, whatever.

Of course you can use it as a regular pocket diaper or even just as a cover.  Pretty cool, right?

Black Inside

Oooh, this is one of my favorite things.  This is the only diaper that I have seen with a black interior.  I’ve seen them with other colors, but this is the only one with black.  And it’s not the usual fleece either.  These suckers have a velour inner.  Oh yes.  They’re soft.  Very soft.  The downside to that is that they pick up all kinds of hair and loose fibers.  It sounds worse than it looks as you can see in the pictures above.

Wide Elastic in the Back

I love having wide elastic in the back.  I feel like it keeps the poo contained better, with less of chance for it to wick onto clothes, blankets, car seat covers- You get the point.  The elastics around the legs are much skinnier.  I’ll admit, I would like the leg elastics to be a little wider, but that’s really a personal preference.  These do keep everything contained.

Four Rise Settings

I love having so many settings.  It makes for a better fit, I think.  Less chance for baby to be in a size in between.

Two Rows of Waist Snaps

I have to confess, I was more fond of hook and loop closures because I could get a better fit, but lately, I’ve been leaning towards snaps.  For one thing, I’m tired of passing Little Man to his papa or setting him in his swing minus his diaper.  Yeah, that’s happened.

Rock-A-Bums snaps are set close together and the two rows are offset, which allows you to get a great fit.  Also, they do not have hip snaps.  Which is great, because Sister (who’s about 37 or 38 pounds) is on the last few snaps, so she can still wear these and I don’t have to try and find some way to cover up hip snaps so they don’t dig into her skin (or just skip using the diaper completely).  I haven’t had a problem with wing droop on Little Man though, and he wears these snapped almost all the way in.

My only suggestion about the snaps would be to add some crossover snaps to one wing or both.  I know not every baby is built like Little Man, but he’s got a tiny waist and if I’d been trying to put these on him when he was a couple of months old, I probably would have needed crossover snaps.

I have to admit, I love the red snaps on the black diaper.  These pictures are with one Rock-A-Bums insert.  My models would not hold still for me for their photo shoot. lol

Two Inserts Included

Most diapers include only one, or they might include a newborn and a one size.  Rock-A-Bums includes TWO full size inserts.  They’re made from several layers of microfiber topped with charcoal bamboo and have a snap on one end so you can snap them into the Bomb Shell.  They’re heavy duty enough that one will last Little Man a couple of hours (and he’s a super soaker).  Sister does not pee a lot, so these last her a good long while.  I tend to use cotton prefolds inside though (I do prefer natural fibers).  I think using both of the inserts would make a good nighttime diaper (it would be a bit bulky, but it would work), or even using one of these with a hemp doubler underneath would be great for bedtime.

It’s great that it comes with two inserts because you could use this diaper for day or night, without having to worry about getting anything extra.  They’re going to be offering a disposable option sometime in the future (hopefully soon!) and I would love to see them offer a natural fiber option like hemp.  That would rock!

The Colors

Right now, Rock-A-Bums comes in three colors.  They have red, white, and black.  All of them have the black interior.  I’ll admit, I am looking forward to seeing what prints and other colors they might come out with.  I personally would love to see a rocking purple. 🙂  The red and white have black snaps, while the black (like I mentioned) have red snaps.  I do have all three colors.  The red isn’t as orange-y looking as it seems in the pictures.  It’s a really beautiful red.

Overall

I love that these diapers come ready to use with two inserts and that they emphasize how many ways these can be used.  That might seem a little overwhelming to a cloth diaper initiate, but it’s really not.  These are one of my favorite diapers, and I really recommend them.  They also come with hook and loop closures, which I have not tried.

So if you are on the hunt for something new to add to your stash, or are looking to buy your first cloth diaper, I say you should get Rock-A-Bums.  They’re not pricey, they’re great quality, you get two inserts, and they look good on baby.  As far as I know, they’re only available through the Rock-A-Bums website right now.  These are rocking our world! 😉
