Can I Mix & Match Cloth Diaper Inserts? (Diaper Advice)

Can I mix and match my cloth diaper inserts?

Cloth diaper inserts can make or break a diapering experience.  With that in mind, people frequently want to know if it’s okay to mix and match your cloth diaper inserts.

Like most bits of cloth diaper advice, it depends. Can I Mix & Match Cloth Diaper Inserts (Cloth Diaper Addicts)

Cloth Diaper Inserts Size

It’s important to use cloth diaper inserts that fit.  I would never use an original FuzziBunz minky insert in a BumGenius diaper.  The minky inserts are just far too narrow.  The size difference is so great that it would be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.  Because of the gap, the diaper would leak.  Badly.  Likewise, I wouldn’t try stuffing a BumGenius insert in an original FuzziBunz Elite, either.  The BumGenius diaper is so very wide that there’s no way it would fit comfortably.  You’d be forcing it in and your baby would end up with a weird, probably uncomfortable wrinkle under the bum.

What Do You REALLY Need to Start Cloth Diapering?

I’ve learned a ton in the four years between now and when I decided to start cloth diapering.  I never really am aware of how much I’ve come along until I start looking at my throwback posts… and then I kind of have to laugh.  In a recent throwback, I had my theoretical “what I need to start cloth diapering” list.

Here’s the thing, though, the more I think about it.  You really, really don’t need much to start cloth diapering.  You can start small and build up as you go.  I mean, really, I have a ridiculous amount of diapers now, but I most certainly didn’t start out that way. [Read more…]

Pocket Diapers as Diaper Covers? (Diaper Advice)

“Can I use pocket diapers as diaper covers?”

People who are just starting out with cloth often wonder about using pocket diapers as diaper covers.  After all, pocket diapers are cheap and plentiful and available in some really super cute patterns… but if we don’t have to use a new cover, then that can make using cloth diapers even more cost effective. Overnight Cloth Diaper Options

Everyone has different preferences for overnight cloth diaper options.  There are a variety of factors to take into consideration: how heavy of a wetter one is dealing with, what’s user friendly, what’s available (a lot of us prefer to buy local in my community), and what’s cost effective.  Some popular overnight cloth diaper options were rejected in my house because my husband either couldn’t figure it out or just didn’t like them for whatever reason.

Recently, I asked my local cloth diaper community what they chose for their overnight cloth diaper options.  Some of them were awesome enough to share pictures.

Thirsties Stay Dry Insert Review

Recently, I got a Thirsties Stay Dry insert from Cozy Bums, my local cloth diaper store.  Kerri had just gotten them in and wanted to know what I thought.  The Thirsties Stay Dry insert is a two piece insert that snaps together.  It’s very similar to the Thirsties Duo pocket insert.  One piece is hemp/cotton blend; the other piece is microfiber topped with a wicking microfleece.  Like the rest of the Thirsties line up, it’s made in the USA. New Cloth Diaper Reveals for Spring 2013

There are a few definite signs that spring is here.  One, of course, is that there’s finally no snow left in my yard and that most of the local trails are clear.  The other is that companies are announcing their new cloth diaper prints.

It seems like every time I think that it’s time to downsize and I manage to get rid of a few less used items in my cloth diaper stash, the new cloth diaper lines come out and I see things that I just have to have.  If it’s a release that have matching boy/girl diapers for Eudora and Huan, then Huan’s mom and I are all over that.

Fuzzi Bunz New Cloth Diaper Prints

Fuzzi Bunz New Cloth Diaper Prints

FuzziBunz new prints are limited edition.  The left one, called Swirl, reminds me of roses.  I’m completely loving it.  The right new cloth diaper print is called Puzzle, and is to represent the living puzzle of Autism.  Autism is a cause that is very near and dear to Tereson Dupuy’s heart, so it’s extremely appropriate.  That being said, I’m looking forward to adding Swirl to my stash.  Because, you know, I just don’t have enough diapers.  And I think Huan will look very handsome in the Puzzle.

GroVia New Cloth Diaper Colors

GroVia's New Cloth Diaper Line Up

So, ignoring the typo, I’m loving the vibrant colors!  The citrus is a really nice, acidic yellow.  The persimmon will add a nice pop of color.  Nice job, GroVia!

Rumparooz New Cloth Diaper Prints

Rumparooz new cloth diaper

Rumparooz has presented us with a super trendy stripy pair called Dexter (left) and Quinn (right.)  Huan’s mom suggested that these might be the new matching pair that we’ll have to get for Huan and Eudora… But I’m really just loving the Dexter.  Okay, so the name makes me think of serial killers with a code rather than diapers, but it’s just a killer cute print.

Hmm.  The more I look at the Quinn, though, the more it grows on me.

ThirstiesThirsties New Cloth Diaper

Okay, the new cloth diaper from Thirsties (called Polka Dance) is seriously cute.  I love the white piping that’s always present on the Thirsties Duo Pocket, and this print is no exception.

Which new cloth diaper prints are you most excited about?

Best Coordinating Diaper for Sesame Street

I am a nut. Or at least, I’m a little bit obsessed with coordinating diapers with my kids’ outfits. Really, one of the most fun parts of using cloth diapers is coordinating diapers with cute little dresses and shirts. I do buy cloth diapers to coordinate with clothing and buy clothing to coordinate with outfits. Since Norton is all about Sesame Street, I’ve become pretty much a pro at what diapers look best with various Sesame Street characters.  Here’s my best coordinating diaper list:

Best Coordinating Diaper with Cookie Monster

Norton is modeling the Best Bottom diaper in Cookie Monster

Cookie Monster is just an amazing little monster. He’s a glutton. He’s a philosopher. And he’s got the single-minded determination of a toddler out to get a treat. He’s also a pretty nifty blue color.

Best Bottom in Cookie Monster. Best Bottom got it right when they named a blue diaper with brown trim Cookie Monster. It is the perfect shade of blue. I’ve actually rested the diaper against a Cookie Monster t-shirt and found that he was identical.  I don’t think you’ll get a better coordinating diaper than that!

Where to buy: Cozy Bums (Canada), Lagoon Baby, Nicki’ Diapers, Cloth Diaper Addicts Amazon Store

Best Coordinating Diaper with Grover

Ah, Grover.  Or now, Super Grover, the hapless superhero who shows up.  He’s a lovely shade of dark blue.  He’s so awesome that he deserves a perfect match.

Knickernappies in Royal Blue.

This particular Knickernappies diaper has long been a favorite for certain outfits, but it’s amazing how well it goes with Grover.

Best Coordinating Diapers with Oscar the Grouch

Every neighborhood needs a grouch.  In most neighbhorhoods, it’s the old man that shakes his cane threateningly while yelling “You kids get off my lawn!”  In Sesame Street, it’s the cantankerous contradiction known as Oscar.  While he may delight in being unhelpful, smelly, and noisy, he will not tolerate anyone being less than kind to his pet worm Slimey.

BumGenius (or any other Cotton Babies product) in Ribbit.

I love my BumGenius 4.0 diapers, but I’m particularly fond of matching the BumGenius 4.0 diaper with Oscar the Grouch. It’s a fairly deep green that just goes so nicely with Oscar on shirts. I suspect that’s because Oscar on t-shirts doesn’t look as dirty as he does on television.

Best Coordinating Diaper for Sesame Street (Cloth Diaper Addicts)Thirsties Duo Cloth Diaper in Meadow

The first Thirsties Duo cloth diaper I that I’d ever purchased was in Meadow.  I started kicking myself for parting with it (because I’d made the mistake of buying it in a Velcro closure) instead of converting it to snaps.  It’s such a wonderfully coordinating diaper!

Where to buy: Cozy Bums, Nicki’s Diapers, Kelly’s Closet, Kissed By the Moon

Best Coordinating Diapers with Elmo

Ah, Elmo.  The furry little red monster that dominates Norton’s room.  He’s got that big round orange nose that clashes so hard with his fur, but whatever.  Kids love the eternal toddler who speaks in third person.

GlowBug Orange Spectrum

GlowBug is known for selling lovely patterned packs of cloth diapers. While their patterned diapers are in gender specific packs, their Spectrum package is in gender neutral solids. It just so happens that the orange diaper perfectly coordinates with Elmo’s nose.

Where to buy: Lagoon Baby

Thirsties Duo Cloth Diaper in Mango

When I saw the Thirsties Duo in Mango online, I thought it was a nice, dusky orange.  However, it turns out that the pictures online do not do this diaper justice!  It’s more of an orange sherbet color… and is actually the color of Elmo’s nose.

Orange Pumkin Baby Kangas

Baby Kangas in Orange Pumpkin

Sometimes I’m amazed at how different the stock colors are versus the actual color.  I thought that the pumpkin was a sort of garish orange that I would never own since I’m not a fan of orange to begin with.  But it’s much nicer in person.
